Daniel 'Oz' Osbourne |
Oz is the guitarist in the rock group
"Dingoes Ate My Baby", and is apparently quite brilliant - he was one
of only two Sunnydale High students recruited by a large unnamed computer software company during Career
Week - "What's My Line Part 1" (2.9), although his sole ambition
appears to be to master the E-flat diminished ninth chord on his guitar. He
tends not to pay much attention in class, although he does test well.
Mid-way through his senior year at Sunnydale, Oz was bitten by his cousin Jordy,
who turned out to be a werewolf ("Phases" - 2.15). The bite transmitted Jordy's lycanthropy to Oz,
and his initial foray into wolfdom nearly caused a panic - and
almost got him killed by a hunter after his pelt - but he now knows that he has
to be locked up three nights a month.
Oz is a guy who takes things in his stride - he was very nonchalant at the
revelation that he is a werewolf, and equally blasé when he discovered that
vampires inhabit Sunnydale and Buffy is the Slayer ("Surprise" - 2.13)
-
Oz - Hey, did everybody see that guy just turn to dust?
Willow - Uh, well, uh... sort of.
Xander - Yep. Vampires are real. A lot of them live in Sunnydale. gestures at Willow Willow will fill you in.
Willow - I know it’s hard to accept at first.
Oz - Actually, it explains a lot.
He has joined the inner circle of the Slayerettes, so far providing transportation in his van, and tracking down Buffy when she was turned into a rat in "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" (2.16). He found himself attracted to Willow from the moment he first saw her in an Eskimo outfit ("Inca Mummy Girl" - 2.4), and more so when he saw her in her rather revealing Halloween outfit ("Halloween" - 2.6) although they didn't actually speak until Sunnydale High's Career Week. In the following episode, "What's My Line Part 2", he saved her from the Tarakan assassins, and they started dating a short while later in "Surprise". His lycanthropy has not noticeably interfered with their relationship, although he was willing to break up with her if she wanted - she didn't.
