Jenny Calendar |
Given the name Janna at birth, Jenny Calendar belongs to an
ancient Romanian Gypsy tribe. She assumed the name Jennifer Calendar when she
was sent to Sunnydale to keep an eye on the vampire Angelus,
who had been cursed by her tribe eighty years earlier. Presumably, Janna was
sent after the demon Whistler brought Angel from New
York to Sunnydale.
Jenny was hired as a computer-science teacher at Sunnydale High School, and it
was there that she met Rupert Giles (pictured above
with her) and worked with him
when she initiated a project to scan several of the school library's works into
the computer system; when the demon Moloch was scanned into the Internet via
this project, Jenny helped Giles exorcise the demon (see "I Robot, You
Jane" (1.8)). Jenny also saw the signs of the
Master's eventual freedom from imprisonment and offered to help Giles and
Buffy stop him ("Prophecy Girl"(1.12)). A very modern woman, Jenny
dressed similarly to her students, spoke in slang, and had an excellent rapport
with her classes.
Despite their differing philosophies - Giles being very much a technophobe -
Jenny and Giles were attracted to each other and, after months of flirting,
began to date (see "Some Assembly Required" (2.2)), although the
relationship stuttered when Jenny was possessed by the demon Eyghon, whom Giles
had helped to conjure in his youth (see "The Dark Age" (2.8)) although
Jenny eventually forgave him. Less easy for Giles to forgive of Jenny was the
revelation of the reason why she was in Sunnydale (see "Innocence"
(2.14)).
She explained the full nature of the curse on Angel to Buffy and Giles, then
tried to find a way to restore the vampire's soul using a computer program she
wrote to translate the original curse, but was murdered by Angel before she
could perform it. He destroyed the hard copy of the translation, but Willow
and Buffy found the file on a disk after Jenny's death, and Willow, Oz
and Cordelia performed the spell, fulfilling Jenny's
dying wish.
Jenny/Janna was played by Robia LaMorte.
